A powerful 16th-century fortification in the fortification system of the Old Town, erected by the project of the Italian master D. Batista. The building did not perform defensive functions. At the base of the barbican tower is a monument to the Siren. According to legend, in ancient times the Siren emerged from the river and informed people that soon a great city would appear on the banks. Today, the fort is an exhibition gallery.

I read people referring to the age of this fortified entrance to the old town but I'm afraid this a thorough and careful reconstruction after it was almost raised to the ground in WWII. It makes it maybe more admirable.

I think it is definitely a landmark and the place is worth visiting, but it lacks authenticity. Obviously, it was restored and it looks like it was built yesterday and not in the 16th century.

This is a great and relaxing place in the city. Such a wonderful location for a night walk in Warsaw specially! Despite its intended use, the Barbican was only ever used in one fighting action when on June 30, 1656, during the Swedish deluge, Polish troops attacked to retake the city. In the 18th century, the Barbican was partially demolished with the remains being incorporated into new apartment buildings. It was during the interwar period that restoration work began to return the Barbican to its former glory, but alas, World War II put a hold to works, with it being completely destroyed. Along with the Old Town reconstruction, the fortified wall and Barbican were restored. Today, it serves as a bridge between the Old and New Town, and is also the hangout of choice for teenage drinkers, buskers and 'artists' selling their wares.

This is a really impressive entry gate to the old city, across the wall. You can walk along the wall in both directions and around the base. Considering its age, it is very well preserved and in lovely condition for a brick built structure.

With so much of the original city unfortunately destroyed in WWII, it’s an important part of any trip to Warsaw to see those historic bits of the Old Town which still remain. The Barbican gate is chief among those, in my mind. A sight to behold.. Read more ».
