Tomb Kotsiubynskyi is a fascinating and serene location in Chernihiv, Ukraine. The grave of Mykhailo Kotsyubynsky, a renowned Ukrainian writer, is meticulously maintained, free of any litter or debris. Situated on a cliff, the monument offers breathtaking views of Chernihiv, St. Elijah's Church, and the picturesque Boldina Mountain. It is not only a place to pay homage to the final resting place of the esteemed writer but also a gateway to other historically significant landmarks in Chernihiv.
The grave itself is adorned with flowers, symbolizing the enduring admiration and respect for the great Ukrainian writer. Mykhailo Kotsyubynsky was born in Vinnitsa in 1864 and passed away in Chernihiv in 1913. He was not only a prolific writer but also a public figure and a prominent figure in Ukrainian literature, proficient in nine languages. Tragically, his son Yuri Kotsyubynsky, a prominent Ukrainian Soviet party leader, was executed in 1937. Additionally, his adopted son Vitaly Primakov, a Soviet military leader, met the same fate that year in the Tukhachevsky case. His wife, Vera Ustinovna, is also laid to rest nearby.
The Boldina Mountain park, where the grave is located, is a serene and peaceful setting. The monument to Mykhailo Kotsyubynsky's grave was established in September 1930, initiated by the local union of writers. It is a four-level pyramid made of gray granite. In 1955, a new monument was erected on Boldina Hill, surrounded by a platform paved with granite slabs. The monument underwent significant changes, with intricate plant ornaments adorning the lower part of the grave. The bronze bust of M. Kotsyubinsky was placed on a tall granite pedestal, and two memorial plaques were installed, honoring both the writer and his wife.
Tomb Kotsiubynskyi is a popular destination for tourists, attracting many visitors throughout the year. It is considered one of the most extraordinary sights in Chernihiv, evoking a sense of the power of life and true love. This memorable place holds the beautiful words of Maxim Gorky, who immortalized Kotsiubynskyi in his writings.
