The main museum of New York, which houses one of the largest collections of art. It was founded in 1870 with funds from business patrons. Until now, the gallery exists with private funding and does not use the funds of state funds. Thanks to its rich collection, the museum is on a par with the Madrid Prado, the St. Petersburg Hermitage, the Paris Louvre.

A much smaller second location, The Cloisters at Fort Tryon Park in Upper Manhattan, contains an extensive collection of art, architecture, and artifacts from medieval Europe.
