Tramendous historical place to visit, built in the 11th century. Several buildings with excibitions and fresco on the religious topics. I would advise to explore it with the guided tour and buy souvenirs.

The visit of the cathedral was a nice experience. We were a but disappointed by the side buildings / museum which didn't add too much value to the day (but are very cheap to access) but entering the main cathedrale Sainte-Sophia and going on top.. Come here to experience Byzantine Architecture and some history. Note that you are looking at a mishmash of time periods and styles in one “frame”. The faded and stylish drawings are the originals, the simpler style ones are much more rec.. Read more »ent renovation efforts. The QR codes directing to an online guide are helpful. Go upstairs to see an original, vivid old-style mosaic taken from another church before it was demolished. Visit the balcony and gaze down on the first floor, as the royals did at this very spot some 1000 years ago.

Our visit to St Sophia Cathedral was extremely soured by this rude doorman. The cashier who sold us tickets didn’t provide any explanation of what each fee included, so we had no way of knowing that our “bell tower ticket” actually .. Read more »didn’t include a simple admission to the grounds. When we asked the doorman about this, he waved at us and then started lashing out at us, as if we were super dumb to ask a simple question. Is it so much to ask for someone to give a simple and calm explanation of what we are paying for? Ukrainian customer service has not yet made it out of the 90s, unfortunately.

This cathedral is really impressive. You can't expect about it height, so colossal. It is located in a huge square, where old people fought a very important civil war, then it is a very important point of interest.

The cathedral, famed for its 13 gilded domes, was initiated in 1037 by Prince Yaroslav the Wise whose sarcophagus is on display.
You have to take your time shuffling around the interior because of the sheer quantity of medieval frescos and mosaics that have survived since the cathedral was built.
The pinnacle is the Orans of Kiev icon in the chancel vault, standing six metres high and depicting the Virgin Mary.
In the monastic buildings there’s a museum showing medieval artefacts from the cathedral and a model of Kiev before it was annihilated by the Mongols in 1240.

I headed over to St. Sophia’s Cathedral, which was massive and enchanting, but also super dark, cold and fascinating. The nuns were everywhere to be found and the big entrance was really lovely, but the star of the show is the giant egg display.. Read more » upstairs. It’s a 15,000 painted egg mosaic made in about 10 years ago. The coolest part was that the artist enlisted the help of schoolchildren in order to paint all the eggs needed for the project.
