The architectural complex, designed by B. Rastrelli (commissioned by Empress Elizabeth). Another name for the monastery is the Resurrection Novodevichy Convent. The Smolny monastery was built for 87 years, the work was constantly interrupted by wars and the lack of sufficient funding. The main cathedral was never opened for worship. The entire interior of the monastery was seized during the USSR. Since 1990, a concert hall has been operating here.

Sobor is very beautiful inside. The central part was under renovation, but still there was a lot to see. Observation deck is needed to visit as well. It is better to go up there when there’s good visibility.

The interior of the church is not so special but the design and ornaments of the building is ravishing. You can use the stairs inside the church to climb top of the building. It takes some effort but the view is worth it.

A true gem! It's a bit far from the city center but it's definitely one of the most beautiful cathedral in St.Peterburg. You can go the top of the tower by a small price which would be contributed to the maintenance.

Truly a "wow" from afar and inside. Probably one of the most beautiful cathedrals I have seen with the calm blue exterior and the "pure" white ( and some gold) interior. Around the main cathedral are several other buildings that also served as a girls school. Definitely worth a visit.

It has been under restoration and you’ll see only white wall at inside. But the best part of this place is that you can access on the top with 150 RUB. The route is quite hard but the view will make you feel good.

It's not quite like the other cathedrals in Russia. It has more elegant decorating. Though one part is still under reconstruction, you can walk inside and see white walls with golden images of the saints. Also you can take around 280 steps up .. Read more »to the bell tower, to see the city.
