The palace is located in the southern part of Salzburg. It was erected for Archbishop Leopold Firmian in the 18th century. The architectural project was developed by a monk of the Order of St. Benedict, who was also a talented architect. Leopoldskron was intended for the residence of the archbishop and his family. The interior decoration of the palace is dominated by a slightly pretentious Rococo style with rich murals.

Daniel approached us and asked if we had just checked into the hotel. At first, he seemed nice. We said we hadn't but were thinking about making a reservation so were taking a quick look. He suddenly became really angry and shouted at us that we had to leave immediately because only hotel guests were allowed on the property.
If that is the policy and we violated it, we shouldn't have, and he had every right to ask us to leave. But the WAY that he told us was so ridiculously rude that we would never dream of staying there. He has permanently ruined it for us. He thinks he is better than everyone because he manages a hotel that isn't even that great. In fact, it is no longer considered a Leading hotel since he started managing it. We have stayed at way nicer and more expensive Leading hotels all over the world and they didn't act like that. Daniel should be replaced ASAP.

Keep in mind for Sound of Music lovers—this property is private & only accessible if you have reservations. So I definitely recommend booking at least one night here! Just know the only actual scene filmed here was the iconic lake scene—totally worth paying for a night. 😁

Unfortunately, we were pretty disappointed with our room which was located in the Meierhof building. The Meierhof building (the annex building next to the palace, which holds most of the guest rooms) is in much need of repair and updates. Carpets were stained, hallways were dark. After walking around the annex and seeing where the other guest rooms were located, we felt a little better that we had a "better" room than most guests. Our room though, which is consider a "premier room", (Meierhof Double Room Premium) looked and felt like a dorm room. There was nothing impressive about the room other than the view over the yard and lake. Housekeeping was not at all diligent in washing cups and glasses nor resupplying coffee daily. The cabinet area where the safe was located looked unfinished and unpainted. The pillows and linens are well-worn and need to be replaced. The furniture was substandard and tired. We felt the room was not up to the standards of a premier hotel, and definitely not worth the price that we paid.

My expectations were much higher than the experience I received. True, we had a room and not a suite, but from the moment we entered, it was somehow disappointing. Stains in the carpeting and it just looked dated. This place begs for renovation.

There is no option for dinner, either you have to walk to a restaurant they recommend across the pond (but that one is really really bad) or you have to take a cab to downtown Salzburg. Which, by the way, I recommend everyone to do.
The breakfast is fine by the way, in a beautiful room but the only pity is that there are many big tables so you are often forced to eat your breakfast with other people at the table. And I don't want that.
Next time I will take a hotel in the city center, you can dine well in many places in Salzburg and then I will be within walking distance of my hotel.

From my room I got a beautiful view of the Salzburg ancient fortress and the many beautiful mountains that surround it.
Room suites are also fitted with everything to make your stay memorable, heaters for the snowy cold and a complimentary minibar.
The Staff were courteous and ready to help at all times.
You should visit the Christmas village if you are here in December, you deserve to see the many beauties of Salzburg!

I believe there’s 15 rooms in the palace. There is another more modern building with 50+ rooms that are smaller and don’t have the view. Both buildings are about 50m from each other though. Lovely lake to walk around that’s open to the public, so you need to leave the property to find the start of the trail. If you need to head to the train station or into town, the bus stop is about 10min walk. I walked into town and it took about 30 minutes. Great breakfast buffet selection in a stunning room. Highly recommend staying here for the experience of sleeping in a palace and the views.

The entire staff from the front desk to the servers and groundskeepers were kind, inviting, and made us feel at home.
The breakfast, which can be taken in the ballroom, library, sundeck, and a number of other rooms was wonderful. Get there early for a table with a view.
Right out the front gates there is a bike path that wanders through a field below the castle and into the old town area in about a 15 min walk. The views are wonderful along the path and you can access most of Salzburg tourist attractions, restaurants and cafe's within less than 30 min on foot.
