The Salzburg Puppet Theater has existed since 1913 and is considered the oldest in Europe. For more than 100 years of work, it has gained worldwide popularity. Both children and adults go to the theater performances with pleasure. The central place in the repertoire is occupied by works performed with the accompaniment of music by V.A. Mozart. Operas, ballets, dramatic plays, operettas are performed with the participation of puppets.

This is not really something I would normally go to and kind of booked ticket because was not sure what else to do in Salzburg that night however it was one of the best experiences I have ever been to. WOW, I saw the Sound of Music show and was totally blown away by the artistry and skill of the puppeteering. No spoilers here but they also incorporated a few human-puppet interactions that were super cool.

I think this particular show is especially fun to see if you have watched the Sound of Music film before, since you can see how they transformed the musical numbers into something puppet-friendly.

Visited on a Sunday to see a performance of Der Alte Baum (The Old Tree). This beautifully performed show played to a full house with live music from the orchestra and incredibly talented opera singers. Highly recommended.

Watching the sound of music through dancing puppets made the experience better than the movie! Hats off to the artists who made the puppet movements look almost mechanized. There was very little puppetry involved. It was more of a story telling. That too a very simple, boring and meaningless story. I and my wife both dozed off in middle of the show. The models they have created are cute.
I doubt how good this really is even for those who understands German.
To top on it, they force you to check-in your bag and pay 1 Euro extra as if wasting 30€ and 1 Hr of your life weren't enough.

Kind of pricey for a short performance. Taking into consideration that it's an art form that needs a different set of skills, I think it might be worth a visit. The stories are told in German with subtitles shown on the walls.

We came here to watch the puppet version of the Sound of Music.
My expectations were for something tacky & touristy but these were surpassed by a production which was professional and artful in a suitable setting. Children are catered for with b.. Read more »ooster cushions & there is food and drink at the interval.
Overall it was an enjoyable experience with a great exhibition of the art of puppetry. And I would recommend people visit the other more operatic productions on the basis of that.
The only improvement I could see would be to improve the merchandise.

Great poppy show! Must watch! There are one hour show and two hours show in different days. And the show on each day is different too. So make sure to check the show name, duration and time in advance.
