The main square of St. Petersburg, located in front of the Winter Palace. Its dimensions are almost twice the capital's Red Square. An architectural ensemble with perfect geometric proportions was built in the XVIII-XIX centuries. In the middle of the square is a monumental column of Alexandria, which is dedicated to the victory of the Russian Empire over Napoleon's army. The column was erected by decree of Nicholas I.

This is next to the winter place. Hermitage. Enchanting atmosphere..all day. Must visit both in daylight and night time to see the beautiful illumination of the historic buildings around the square. Nice performances by people and groups on the stree.. Read more »ts. Enter the gate and visit shops for souvenirs. People selling items on the street offer a very good deal for buying souvenirers. There is a dedicated souvenir shop as well. Good items.

On my first day in Saint Petersburg, I was just rambling around Nevsky avenue and walked about 1.5 km to the place square without realizing that it is popular landmark. For a moment, it felt it is a touristy spot, so checked on google and it happened.. Read more » to be Palace Square right opposite to the State Hermitage Museum. I was stunned to see the massiveness of the whole square. You will find a lot of street musicians out there. Please do not forget to capture panorama shots of the square. It is worth watching.

During the day the Palace Square gets very busy with tourists, especially on weekends.
