After Staro Mesto was recognized as a city, according to the laws of the XIII century it was necessary to build a town hall where the city government could be located. But own town hall appeared in Prague only in the XIV century. Over 700 years of existence, it has grown significantly, since many extensions have appeared. The ancient Astronomical Tower houses the existing Astronomical Clock of the beginning of the XV century - a unique creation of watchmakers with many dials built into each other.

When ascending the tower you can pay extra to take the lift, but I wouldn't bother as there is a spiral ramp as opposed to stairs which isn't particularly challenging or lengthy to climb. You can buy tickets on the third floor but may need to come back another day for your tour, as they book up quite quickly.

The old town hall is very impressive from the outside. The tower is very tall. In the inside in the “museum” there’s not much to see but it’s still worth going there. The view from the tower is astonishing. Absolutely loved it. If you’re around, it’s certainly worth it to go there and climb the tower, you won’t regret it.

The Old Town Hall was at the heart of the politics of the city of Prague throughout the medieval period. If you enter you can ascend for free up a .. Read more »number of levels before paying to see the interior of the hall. This has a chapel, wherein you can see part of the back of the mechanism of the astronomical clock (the rotating apostles who appear at the window). After seeing this you can see the old halls of judgement, some of which are still currently used for state functions.
After seeing the hall you can ascend the tower. There are gently sloping walkways, but for those who are worried about heights or who just prefer faster ascents, there is an elevator that goes straight to the top. The top of the tower is enclosed in glass, but you can walk outside and take pictures, although those who are worried about heights may find the experience a little nerve-wracking (it is perfectly safe though). This tower has what are possibly the best views of all of Prague and the hall and tower are a must-see if one wishes to see the Old Town from above.

You can be adventurous by climbing the stairs or take the easier way using the two elevators at the tower.
