The construction is crowned by the mountain of the same name in the city of Barcelona. Until the XVI century, there was a watchtower, in the middle of the century (during the Catalan uprising against the Habsburg government) a fortress wall and defensive structures appeared. In the XVIII century the fort was taken by the British, but very soon the Spaniards recaptured Montjuic. Today, a military museum is located on the territory of the fortress.

This mountain can easily be hiked, no need to take the funicular if you're average fitness. However, the roads are kinda dirty and sometimes it smelled like pee on the way, but at the top its quite nice.

This is one of the hills on which the city is built. A steep climb rewards the sweaty traveller with some very memorable views of Barcelona. Further uphill - the Montjuic Castle, surrounded by a majestic (drained) moat, and a few viewing areas (miradors) disappointingly providing detailed views of the industrial harbour below rather than of Barcelona itself (the view towards the city is restricted by trees). One can delight in a thorough study of shipping containers from above, a delight for the naval equivalent of train-spotters, I am sure.
I am not rating it with 5 stars for two reasons:
- The whole area is a bit derelict, with more litter and dishevelled spots than one would like to see (in fact, this is a feature of Barcelona itself, with a sense of urban decay settling in);
-The poor sign-posting. A few well placed, clear maps with visible “you are here” spots would make all the difference. Google and Apple maps were useless on this occasion, because I wanted to see the trajectory of the cable cars (there are two on the Montjuic hill) so I could take the one going to the harbour, boarding at the upper station. (Entering “Montjuic cable car” or “Port cable car” invariably displayed the low stations, not those on the hill, and scrutinising the zoomed map wasn’t helpful either - hugely disappointing and intensely frustrating!) I was not able to locate it so in the end I took the other one back down to the city. But overall Montjuic is definitely worth a trip and I will remember it as an airy spot suffused with light and Mediterranean light-heartedness. I will visit again.

Amazing place on top of a hill with a picturesque overview of Barcelona! You can reach the top of Montjuic hill where the castle is located either by cable car or by foot. It is a 20-minute walk from the bottom. The cable car isn't that expensiv.. Read more »e and is pretty cool and a different experience, so I would recommend using it. Moreover, near the castle are positioned several different cannons and artillery which is also some kind of attraction. Also, the truly breathtaking Cacti Garden is located at the middle of the hill. It is one of the most amazing and peaceful places I have ever visited. Overall, Montjuic is a must see sight!

Montjuïc is part of the list if you wanna visit Barcelona. You can visit the park, the castle and the mirador reaching the top in the teleferic/cable car with an amazing view over the city. Super interesting experience.

I took the Bus Turistic at Barrio Gótico - for about 35min all the way up to get the cable car to go up to the Castle.
1 way ticket was 9eu the two way was 14eu. Honestly you can go down walking and take the time to stop and enjoy the views. T.. Read more »he access to the castle opens at 10am and costs 5eu. I didn’t do it so can’t say much. The views in the cable car are beautiful! Then you can go down walking through the trails and through the fountains. Currently the night show of the fountains is suspended due to Covid. On your way going up to Montjuic this bus cover several nice spots such as : Palau Nacional, Poblé Español, MNAC (national museum of art of Catalunya - which currently has a Gaudí exhibition until March), fundación Miró and the Olympic Ring. I would say you can do Montjuic in half a day.
