The main cathedral of Lisbon, which arose in the era of the Early Middle Ages. It is believed that in its place was a Roman temple, which the Visigoths turned into a Christian church. During the period of Arab rule on the Iberian Peninsula, the temple was destroyed, and a mosque was erected in its place. In 1150, a new building appeared, which stood six centuries before the earthquake. However, the cathedral was not completely destroyed by the elements, it was reconstructed, diluting the strict Romanesque architecture with Gothic, Baroque and neoclassicism.

The Cathedral of Saint Mary Major is Lisbon's oldest church. Built in 1147 it is a religious and historic icon and landmark. As I reach there on Sunday there was a praying ceremony.
So it was not possible to get close to the Chapel for visitors.

8 euro to visit but it's worth it for the oldest cathedral in Lisbon. The information on your self guided tour is limited. Some things have basic English translations but many don't. You get to see several tombs up close with amazing stone work. The exterior balcony has a terrific view, and the interior is breathtaking. A small museum upstairs has interesting relics. Overall this is a wonderful mature contemplative experience that really complements the monastery in Belem and the national museum with its religious artifacts. Be aware Winter hours are shorter than listed on Google and their own website. Generally get there before 5pm local and you should be good.

On the other side of the stain glass window is the balcony looking down been to the pews. When the organ is playing it sounds amazing from the balcony above (I guess it's the way the sound travels within the building).
On the second floor is a fascinating treasury museum, but they don't allow you to take any pictures in that area, so I'm sorry I don't have any to include with my review.
After visiting the upper levels, you can come down the stairs and walk around behind the front area. There are several shrine rooms with various religious displays.
I think I spent maybe 45 minutes to an hour to see most of what was on display. And, as with most of the tourists sites, there's plenty of souvenir and food shops around and down the hill from this cathedral.
