The formation of the museum collection (in the mid-2000s it numbered about 7,000 copies) began at the same time - in the late 1980s. Thus, the city purchased paintings by prominent representatives of national painting of the late XIX - early XX centuries - V. Orlovsky, O. Murashko, G. Svitlitsky, M. Burachek and others. But over time, it became clear that collecting traditional art, Khmelnytsky Art Museum is still unlikely to compete with the best Ukrainian art collections, and therefore the specialization of the museum, with the support of the staff, was chosen contemporary Ukrainian art.
