The Golden Gate is the main gate of ancient Kiev, a monument of defensive architecture of Kievan Rus, one of the oldest dated structures of Eastern Europe, a symbol of Kiev. The Golden Gate Museum is one of the few sights of Kievan Rus. Defensive structure. The complete reconstruction was carried out in 1982, in 2007 another restoration and conservation of the preserved ancient portions of the Golden Gate was carried out. The museum presents an exhibition that tells about Kievan Rus and in particular about the Golden Gate. Likewise, visitors to the museum can ascend to the church at the top of the gate.
The Golden Gate appeared in the time of Yaroslav the Wise. They were built in about 1017-1037 years. The golden gate was an important element in the defense system of the capital city. The gates were the main entrance to the city. At the top of the Golden Gate, according to the decree of Yaroslav the Wise, a small Church of the Annunciation was erected. Time did not spare this famous historical monument and its walls began to gradually collapse, but managed to restore and preserve this architectural heritage, today we can see the reconstructed Golden Gate, which retained its grandeur and beauty.

Picturesque medieval entrance to the city that has an excibition inside, the construction started in the 11th century. Better to check opening hours to the museum inside, very close to the city center 🧱

Calm and nice square to get the local vibe, stay a bit away from the center crowd, but also not away. Usually some street musicians play hear the monument.
There are also some good cafeterias around from the low to middle budget i guess.

in a very beautiful park. the wooden walls of the gate are impressive. I recommend listening to at least one piece of street artists playing in front of it and watching the pedestrians passing by in the evening traffic.

This is a beautiful place which contains the ruins of the ancient gates of Kiev Rus times. If you like history, you will like this museum. Tours are available too. And for the rest of people it is a favourite meeting point. There are benches around, .. Read more »a fountain under the trees, and an underground station nearby. And it is the centre of the Old City. You can walk around and explore the streets and cathedrals or just choose one of the numerous cafes or restaurants to relax.

Very cool. Interesting history. It gives you a small glimpse into the history of this very old city. It is tucked away right in the middle of the city. Would have been an amazing sight back in the days when it was used.

I loved learning more about Golden Gate. We used metro to reach to Golden Gate as it also has a background history. Station is called “Golden Gate” so it’s very easy to reach. You can also check the inside by getting a ticket.

Entrance fee is 60 UAH. It is beatiful inside. It is 5 or 6 floors and you need to climb stairs. There is no elevator. You can see beatiful Kiev view on top of the gate. In 1982, on Kiev’s 1500th anniversary the gate was reconstructed, even though nobody could agree exactly how it looked in its 11th-century heyday.
So even if the design is open to question the gate is an impressive structure with four tiers of merlons above the main portal and wooden extensions on each side.
In the surrounding garden there’s a monument to Yaroslav the Wise, an enlarged bronze version of a sculpture by Ivan Kavaleridze.
