The world's first museum was born in 1471, when Pope Sixtus IV presented the inhabitants of Rome with a collection of antique bronze. It is located on Capitoline Square, designed by Michelangelo, in three palaces. The New Palace presents an exposition of classical sculpture. In the Palace of Conservatives there are world-famous ancient statues, a collection of paintings of the Renaissance, a collection of coins. The main part of the Palace of Senators is occupied by the City Hall of Rome, the first floor is reserved for the museum.

I didn’t end up stepping inside the building, but the experience from the outside was very nice. Shaded areas to rest at, while enjoying the architecture / sculptures!

Wow! What a site to see Michelangelo's work in action. The bronze wolf with Remus and Romus right next to the square was so unique. The views up and down the steps to the square were very impressive as well.

Michelangelo designed hilltop square with great sculptures in the heart of Rome. It is a must visit. Do not let the steps scare you, it is worth the visit. Musei Capitolini is in this square as well so you have more stuff to see.

There are a lot of stairs/steps, but this is a pretty sizable museum with many different items to see. Also a great view overlooking the Roman Forum next door.

Beautiful square at the top Capitoline Hill, right next to the Capitoline Museums (also a must see). You get a nice view of Rome, and it’s even more beautiful in the evening, as the sun sets and the city lights up.

The heart of Rome. Outstanding views of the forum and the Piazza and adjacent buildings designed by Michelangelo. Nobody who visits Rome should miss a visit to this location. The entry up the monumental steps to the Piazza was also by Michelangelo.

Had a great time at the Museum. Waited a bit in line. I would recommend getting the Rome Pass to avoid. Unfortunately the restaurant on the roof was closed when we went, but we still got to go o. The roof and see the incredible view of the city. The .. Read more »

A wonderful collection of history and art... it was truly unique, to see these works in full, you need to spend hours, which is totally worth it.

Beautiful spot and an amazing view from the top. The view of the sunset over Rome was stunning. A beautiful traffic free square away from the traffic below.

Amazing place with beautiful architecture and museums. I recommend going at night when it's completely empty and quiet, perfect for a photo shoot. It also hides a nice panoramic view of the forum behind the main building.

Good museum showing the roman ruins and the history surrounding them. Virtual reality wasn't working properly but still enjoyed it. The film about Vesuvius is also worth seeing

I feel like the square should be seen, and judged, apart from the museum. The square, designed by Michelangelo, is balanced, uniform, beautiful, and slightly boring, due to its uniformity. It features prominently the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurel.. Read more »

Great view to the city!!! But so many stairs. So I advise you to go there in the morning because after a long day exploring the city it is not a good idea....??

This beautiful square designed by Michelangelo deserves a visit on its own. Although the entrance to the museums is also at this square, the square alone is worth seeing as it is very pretty.

Very impressive building. Even if the elevator to the top costs 12 euro do not miss it. You get fantastic views over Rome.

If you like to visit there in peace and quietly, I recommend the beginning of December… I read a lot of bad news about travelling to Italy in winter , but I should say, I’ve enjoyed it. ?

Beautiful square and views. Come up the adjacent road for wheelchair access. The Michelangelo stairs are neat but too steep for a chair.

Square designed by Michelangelo. Impressive, but not very big. Easy to get there, as it's situated right next to all other tourist attactions. Entrance to the Capitolio museum is also there. Worth a visit, however can be quite crowded. You need .. Read more »

The whole structure is magnificent. The sculptures and construction look very well preserved and it shows power. It is closed for the public bu you can still appreciate the views from near and far.

Nice square next to the forum romanum. Easily included in a city walk. Designed by Michelangelo (even the stairs, on which horses can walk).

Why is this open space best in Rome? First, there is no traffic. No cars at all. You need to go up to the top of the hill and you have nice view from there on the town. Best solution is staircase, work of Michelangelo. Second solution is a road from .. Read more »

The view from the top is incredible but the place itself is fairly normal (by the standards of Rome, at least). Most interesting is, of course, the fact that the whole square was designed by Michaelangelo with the blessings of the Pope at the time; .. Read more »
