Aladzha Monastery

Varna, Bulgaria
4.5 / 88
aladzha-monastery
The 12th century rocky Orthodox monastery, currently in ruins. It is known that from the 4th century Christian hermits lived in the catacombs. The monastery lasted until the end of the XIV century, until it was destroyed by the Ottomans, but the monks continued to inhabit the caves for another four hundred years. Before, almost all grottoes were decorated with frescoes, but today they remained only in the monastery chapel.

A monastery dating 1000 years old approximately... well worth a visit. You should not miss the walk in the forest to see the catacombs....

Fairly average attraction for a overseas visitor. Good only if you have time on hands and want a reason to drive out of Varna. The ticket desk only accepted cash at time of writing.

Nice view, not much to see though. The way to the catacombs was more worth it than the thing itself, very small but still fun. And for now the museum is closed.

Interesting place to visit. Although much of the actual history is lost in time, very intriguing nonetheless. Plenty of free parking available. Note: They don't accept cards, no euros. Only Lev.

I went there to see the monastery it turned out that there were catacombs 10 minutes away from the monastery. A lovely place to visit if you are in the area. It is situated in the national park Golden sands. Nature is gorgeous.

Interesting place to see. Some stairs to climb, so be mindful with toddlers. Catacombs aren't worth the walk. All closed.

Great nature, calm, spiritual secluded place, but actually not many orthodox items to see (like icons, etc.). Easy hike from the shore.

Impressive and worth seeing! The facility is also very good, there’s a restroom available. If you are walking from Golden sands through the main road, keep in mind that there’s no pavement.

Interesting monastery carved in the cliff with carefully landscaped gardens, catacombs and small history museum. The entrance fee is 5 leva for adults. Easy and safe to reach for everyone, no need to hike to get to it.

We got there just before closing... visited 1st the museum (really nice), then the monastery and the catacombs (hidden in the forest, to the left of the entrance). Very interesting human-work... unique to what we've seen so far!

The Golden sands park is a great place for a walk! Don’t go by car - take the forest trail (there are 2-3 of them - all fairly easy)

Interesting place. It takes around 30-45 minutes to visit the place and the museum. There is many interesting facts about cave churches and the beginning of the archeology in Bulgaria.

Something completely different from ordinary tourist attractions. It is worth visiting to understand what hermit really meant and how people understood to draw closer to God in the Middle Ages.
