The Royal Palace is one of the most imposing buildings in the heart of Amsterdam and is for over 350 years one of the biggest sights in the city. In the Dutch Golden Age it was built as the Town Hall of Amsterdam. Both the architecture and the decoration proclaimed the city’s supremacy and prosperity in the seventeenth century. It’s paintings and sculptures were made by some of the most famous artists of the time like Rembrandt’s pupils Ferdinand Bol and Govert Flinck. Louis Napoleon, brother of the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, became the King of Holland and converted the Town Hall into a Palace in 1808.
