The Monument to Taras Shevchenko in Poltava is a significant landmark located in Petrovsky Park, also known as "Sunny Park." It was designed by the renowned Ukrainian sculptor Ivan Kavaleridze in the constructivist style and unveiled on March 12, 1926. The unveiling ceremony was attended by residents of Poltava, surrounding villages, and guests from other cities. As the veil dropped, the familiar melody composed by Gordy Gladky vanished, and a choir of several thousand people sang Taras Shevchenko's Testament. This event reflected the immense importance of Shevchenko in the hearts of the people. The monument itself is an interesting sculpture in the style of Cubism, created by Kavaleridze in 1926. It is made of reinforced concrete and stands on a pedestal that is 3.2 meters tall. The figure of Taras Shevchenko is 1.8 meters in height, emerging from the asymmetrical accumulation of planes and volumes on the pedestal. The monument's minimalist yet powerful design symbolizes Shevchenko's role as a fighter for the freedom and social justice of the Ukrainian people. The Poltava Museum of Local Lore, situated opposite the monument, adds to the historical and cultural significance of the area. The monument and its surroundings provide a beautiful setting for visitors to explore and reflect on the life and legacy of Taras Shevchenko. It is a recommended destination for tourists seeking to immerse themselves in Ukrainian history and culture.
