The Observatory is a popular tourist destination and at the same time a serious scientific institution. It was opened in 1935. Visitors can take part in a planetarium presentation or lecture, as well as a themed exhibit featuring telescopes and planetary models. During the Second World War, the Observatory trained pilots, and in the 1960's, astronauts were trained here to fly to the moon.
