Berlin Schönefeld Airport, located in the capital of Germany, is a bit of a mixed bag when it comes to its facilities and services. On one hand, the airport boasts a visually pleasing design with various shops, cafes, and even some art installations. However, there are several areas where improvements are needed.
One of the major downsides of this airport is its Duty Free zone. Visitors have expressed disappointment with the limited selection of food and drinks available, leading to a less than satisfactory shopping experience. Additionally, there is a surprising absence of coffee shops, which many travelers find hard to believe considering Berlin's status as a major European city.
Another issue is the lack of drinking water fountains. In this day and age, it's expected that airports provide accessible sources of clean water. Instead, staff members suggest using tap water from the toilets, which not everyone is aware is safe to drink. Furthermore, stores refuse to refill water bottles, favoring the sale of plastic bottles. This unsustainable practice is considered poor for an airport that prides itself on being modern and environmentally conscious.
The seating capacity in the gate areas falls short of demand, leaving many passengers without a place to sit. This can be particularly inconvenient and uncomfortable for elderly travelers who may struggle to stand for extended periods. Additionally, the airport's accessibility is called into question, as a 15-minute walk to the station may be challenging for older individuals. Suggestions for moving walkways have been made to address this concern.
While security procedures are necessary, the airport could benefit from allocating more personnel to speed up the queues or implementing a ticket system to minimize waiting times. Waiting in a stationary queue for an hour can be difficult for elderly individuals, and a more efficient process would greatly improve the overall experience.
Despite these criticisms, there are positive aspects to Berlin Schönefeld Airport. Travelers have praised the helpful and friendly staff at the Norwegian Airlines check-in counter, and the overall appearance of the airport is commendable. It's also worth mentioning that the airport can be easily reached by train, offering convenience to passengers.
In conclusion, Berlin Schönefeld Airport has its drawbacks, including issues with the Duty Free zone, lack of drinking water fountains, seating limitations, and security delays. However, efforts are being made to renovate and improve the airport, and it does have some positive aspects such as accessibility and helpful staff. With continued improvements, the airport has the potential to provide a better travel experience for its passengers.

Well organized, accessible by train. Took us less than 30 minutes from parking position to get off the plane, pass the checkpoint and collect our luggage and a stroller.
