The Alfreda Biedermanna Palace is a stunning property that holds a tragic history. Originally owned by Alfred Biedermann, a successful manufacturer and influential figure in Łódź, the palace was also closely associated with the launch of the city's tram service. However, after Alfred's death in 1936, his brother Bruno and his family moved in. The arrival of the Red Army in 1945 resulted in the nationalization of the Biedermann's property, and Bruno received an immediate eviction notice. Fearing persecution and unwilling to go into exile, Bruno made a devastating decision - he took the lives of his wife and daughter before ending his own life. Their bodies were laid to rest without any markings in the palace garden.
Despite this tragic past, the palace is now under the ownership of the University of Lodz. It is an elegant and well-maintained building that offers beautiful interiors and a grand wooden staircase in the living room. I have personally attended a piano concert there and can attest to the excellent acoustics. The palace also features a lovely park, creating a serene atmosphere that is ideal for relaxation. It is worth noting that only two rooms and the staircase have been preserved, while the rest of the building is used for official purposes. While the character of the rooms has been maintained, some may question the decision to convert such beautiful spaces into "official" areas.
Overall, the Alfreda Biedermanna Palace is a fantastic destination for those looking to appreciate its beauty and history. It is a place that showcases the resilience of the human spirit despite the tragedies it has witnessed. Whether visiting for a concert or an art exhibition at Wozownia, the palace offers a unique and unforgettable experience.

On the clothes from the photo are the ruins of the former factory.
Now the palace belongs to the University of Lodz.

Alfred Biedermann's Residence at ul. Franciszkańska 1/5 in Łódź, was built in the years 1910-1912, according to the design of an unknown German architect. Among all such rich residences of Łódź manufacturers, the palace building of Alfred Biedermann is distinguished by its modest form, although its owner could not complain about the lack of funds. The design referred to the type of detached villas built near factories. An L-shaped building was erected, with the main part adjacent to Franciszkańska Street and an outbuilding extending into the property. From the outside, the only decorations are rotunda breaks, columned portal and garden terraces. The whole creates a compact modernist body, freely referring to the baroque architecture. The building was erected shortly before the outbreak of World War I, hence not all elements of the façade's plastic were completed. Only a thorough renovation carried out in the late 90's and early 2000 by the current owner of the building, University of Lodz, enriched the facade.
